River Irwell: water levels along the river

11 gauges report along the River Irwell. 2 of them read below normal for the date, and none is running high.

The gauges on this page are spread across Lancashire and Greater Manchester. Reading the gauges in order shows how a rise or a dry spell travels downstream, usually over a day or more on a big river. Autumn is often a low point for rivers after the summer, until steady rain returns.

About the River Irwell

River Irwell

The River Irwell is a tributary of the River Mersey in north-west England. It rises at Irwell Springs on Deerplay Moor, approximately 1+1⁄2 miles north of Bacup and flows southwards for 39 mi (63 km) to meet the Mersey near Irlam Locks. The Irwell marks the boundary between Manchester and Salford, and its lower reaches have been canalised and now form part of the Manchester Ship Canal.
