Terms of use

1. The service

Nivelmap shows water levels, flows and related data published by public agencies, together with explanations, charts and comparisons. Using the site is free and needs no account. We may change, extend or discontinue features at any time.

2. Who owns the data

The measurements belong to the agencies that publish them, and their licences apply (for example public domain, Open Government Licence, Etalab Open Licence or Creative Commons). The Sources and methods page lists every agency and its licence. If you reuse the data, follow that licence and credit the agency.

The texts, explanations, design, logo and code of Nivelmap are ours. You may quote short passages with a link to the page. Copying whole pages or large parts of the site requires our permission. Photos and extracts from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons are under the licence named beside them.

3. Embeds, downloads and the API

You are welcome to embed our widgets, download the CSV/JSON files and use the public API, including on commercial sites, as long as you use them fairly:

• keep the visible credit to Nivelmap and the agency;
• cache responses and do not poll more often than the data changes (usually every 15 minutes);
• do not crawl the whole site or the API in bulk; ask us at hello@nivelmap.com if you need large amounts of data;
• do not present the data as official warnings or as coming from the agency itself.

4. What is not allowed

Do not try to disrupt or overload the service, get around its security or rate limits, or use it for anything unlawful. We may block access that harms the site or other users, without notice.

5. No warranty, limited liability

The service and the data are provided as they are, without any warranty of accuracy, completeness or availability. Please read the Disclaimer: the data is provisional and must not be used for navigation or as a flood warning.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for damage resulting from the use of the site, the data, embeds or the API. Liability for intent, gross negligence and injury to life, body or health, and any other liability that cannot be excluded by law, is not affected. Mandatory consumer rights in your country remain unaffected.

6. Links to other websites

We link to agencies and other websites for further information. We have no control over their content and are not responsible for it.

7. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms when the service changes. The version shown here, with its date at the bottom of the page, applies. For how we handle personal data, see the Privacy policy.
