What this means

Low water at Union Bridge: the gauge reads 0.02 m, at a record low.

That is below the previous record low of 0.02 m (September 26, 2006), so the gauge is setting a new low. That puts it 0.07 m below the median of 0.09 m for mid-October, based on 21 years of readings. A year ago it stood at 0.04 m (−0.02 m).

The level has held steady over the past 24 hours. Without real rain upstream, that is unlikely to change quickly. The 30-day range is 0.02 m – 0.05 m.

Autumn rain usually starts to lift rivers again after the summer low.

For anglers and canoeists

Low rivers are hard going for paddlers, with exposed gravel and weirs that are awkward to shoot. Salmon and sea trout usually wait for the next spate to run.

Many angling and canoe clubs check gauges like this one before heading out.

About the River Lemon

River Lemon

The River Lemon is a 9.9 miles river in the county of Devon in southwest England. It is a tributary of the River Teign, starting on Dartmoor by Haytor, and ending in Newton Abbot. It rises on the south-east side of Dartmoor near Haytor, joins with the River Sig and the Langworthy Brook at Sigford, then passes the village of Bickington. Lower down, it is joined by the Kestor Brook and it then flows through the woods in Bradley Valley, past the manor house of Bradley, and through the town of Newton Abbot where it flows through a 440-yard-long (400 m) tunnel below the town centre. Just below the town, the river joins the River Teign at 50.517°N 3.607°W, near the head of its estuary.
