What this means

Low water at Stoodleigh: the gauge reads 1.02 m, below normal for mid-October.

The median for mid-October is 1.22 m, based on 21 years of readings, so the river level is 0.20 m below typical. On the same day last year the reading was 1.04 m, a difference of −0.02 m.

It is still going down, by 0.07 m over the past 24 hours. Without real rain upstream, that is unlikely to change quickly. The 30-day range is 0.86 m – 1.13 m.

Autumn rain usually starts to lift rivers again after the summer low.

For anglers and canoeists

Low rivers are hard going for paddlers, with exposed gravel and weirs that are awkward to shoot. Salmon and sea trout usually wait for the next spate to run.

Many angling and canoe clubs check gauges like this one before heading out.

About the River Exe

River Exe

The River Exe is a river in England that rises at Exe Head, near the village of Simonsbath, on Exmoor in Somerset, 5.2 miles (8.4 km) from the Bristol Channel coast, but flows more or less directly due south, so that most of its length lies in Devon. It flows for 60 miles (96 km) and reaches the sea at a substantial ria, the Exe Estuary, on the south coast of Devon. Historically, its lowest bridging point was the Old Exe Bridge in Exeter, the largest settlement on the river, but there is now a viaduct for the M5 motorway about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of the city centre.
