What this means

Low water at Wherwell: the gauge reads 0.19 m, at a record low.

That is below the previous record low of 0.23 m (December 10, 2011), so the gauge is setting a new low. The usual range here runs from 0.30 m to 0.50 m.

The level has held steady over the past 24 hours. Without real rain upstream, that is unlikely to change quickly. The 30-day range is 0.17 m – 0.20 m.

Autumn rain usually starts to lift rivers again after the summer low.

For anglers and canoeists

Low rivers are hard going for paddlers, with exposed gravel and weirs that are awkward to shoot. Salmon and sea trout usually wait for the next spate to run.

Many angling and canoe clubs check gauges like this one before heading out.

About the River Test

River Test

The River Test is a chalk stream in Hampshire in the south of England. It rises at Ashe near Basingstoke and flows southwards for 40 miles (64 km) to Southampton Water. Settlements on the Test include the towns of Stockbridge and Romsey. The river's valley gives its name to the local government district of Test Valley. Below the village of Longparish, the river is broadly followed by the Test Way, a long-distance footpath.

How we check values

Each reading is stored as published. We hold back values that jump faster than physically plausible and show the measurement time with every value.
