What this means

The River Lavant at Chichester Tozer Way is running far below normal at 12.65 m.

The median for mid-October is 12.82 m, based on 20 years of readings, so the river level is 0.17 m below typical. The lowest reading on record is 12.44 m (December 15, 2016).

It has barely moved over the past 24 hours. Without real rain upstream, that is unlikely to change quickly. In the last month it has stayed between 12.57 m and 12.86 m.

Autumn rain usually starts to lift rivers again after the summer low.

Fishing and paddling

At low levels, many rivers become a walk-and-paddle trip. Fish hold in deeper pools and spook easily.

Flood alerts and warnings come from the Environment Agency.

About the River Lavant

River Lavant, West Sussex

The River Lavant is a chalk river winterbourne that rises at East Dean and flows west to Singleton, then south past West Dean and Lavant to Chichester. From east of Chichester its natural course was south to the sea at Pagham, but the Romans diverted it to flow around the southern walls of Chichester and then west into Chichester Harbour.
